1: Look at the extent of the muralist's portfolio. What kind of projects have they done? Are they limited to certain subject matter?
2: Compare and evaluate the quality of their work. Does it look real? Does the perspective look right? Is there character and personality? Is it fun? How does it make you feel when you look at the piece?
3: Examine their experience at working on projects of your scope and size. Did they work on the project by themselves? Were they the lead artist? How high have they been on a lift or ladder?
4: Determine their ability to translate your wants and needs into a cohesive and visually engaging design. Do they listen to you when you explain what you are looking for, or are they simply trying to "sell" a particular design?
5: Are they truly masters of trompe l'oeil? Can they really "fool the eye?" Does their work make you look twice before you can tell it's painted? Do you have to ask, what is real, and what is not?
6: Are murals their hobby or their chosen profession? This matters when it comes to quality and professionalism. Does their work support their family and lifestyle? Is this something that they only do on the weekends?

What Do I Do Next? OK! I really want to have Michael paint a mural for me! How do I get started and what do I do next? The first thing we need to do is talk. This initial consultation determines the extent and details of your project. Michael will take this information back to his studio where he will develop numerous “thumb-nail” sketches of different ideas for your mural. He will work from floorplans, photographs of the space, measurements, whatever it takes to get an accurate representation of the area where the mural is to be painted. The "thumb-nail" sketches will be presented, either in person or via email, to determine which idea is most appealing to you. Once the scale drawing has been approved, the actual painting of the mural will begin. |

Price: Michael’s murals generally average between $50 and $150 per square foot – sometimes less, sometimes more, depending upon the amount of detail required. Please note that initial ballpark estimates for murals are based solely on how long and the degree of detail Michael estimates it will take to paint the project, which relies on information obtained in the initial interview. There are no hidden costs!
